Heatstroke Is Way More Common Than You Think. Do You Know What To Watch For?
It’s great to be able to run outside on a sunny day...unless you end up with heatstroke, that is. In warm climates, heatstroke is 10 times more likely than cardiac events to be life-threatening for runners during endurance races, according to new research published in theJournal of the American College of Cardiology.
Researchers looked at data from more than 137,000 runners who competed in races in Tel Aviv between 2007 and 2013. During that time period, there were only two serious cardiac events, neither of which was life-threatening; there were 21 serious cases of heat stroke, two of which were fatal and 12 of which were life-threatening.
Keep yourself safe this summer by learning how to prevent heatstroke and recognize its symptoms.
